4 Dead As Cultist Clash In Auchi, Edo State

No fewer than four persons have been reported dead in a renewed cult clash between members of Black Axe and Eiye confraternities in the polytechnic town of Auchi in Edo State.

According to the Guardian, it was learnt that the fresh war began Thursday after the completion of the end of the session examination by the federal higher institution of learning.

It was also leant that one of the victims was killed along the Benin-Auchi-Okene highway while the rest three were killed in different locations on the school premises.

The cause of the latest fracas, it was learnt, followed a disagreement among some members of the two rival groups at the graduation party of an unnamed student on that fateful day.
For years, the management of the polytechnic had banned end-of-session partying or celebration on the school premises to forestall violent clashes.

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, Moses Nkombe, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident.

The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) will resume academic activities on Wednesday after a fire incident that affected the institution’s female hostel. The college’s spokesperson, Dr. Charles Oni, in a statement released shortly after the incident said, “all examinations and lectures, especially scheduled for today (Wednesday) have been put on hold while the College attends to the exigency.” He added,

“The Management regrets the misguided and outright falsehood on the social media and calls to certain radio stations that there was no water on campus to quell the fire.

The Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe, Bayelsa State, Mr. Seiyaboh Idah, has said he is not dead contrary to reports on the social media and some online newspapers.

The report, which also appeared on the website of a popular national daily claimed that the rector died at a hotel in Ughelli, Delta State, while allegedly having sex with an undisclosed lady.

But Idah, who expressed serious concern over the report, described it as embarrassing. He described the the report as careless, irresponsible, unprofessional and contrary to a minimum standard of journalism anywhere in the world.
Idah said there was nothing true about the report, noting that it was totally against his “character, moral rectitude, ideals and qualities.”

The rector stated, “I was highly embarrassed by the report. The school, the students, my family including my parents, were all embarrassed and assaulted by the falsehood.

“My friends all over the country and the world have been calling me over this incident to confirm whether l was still alive. You can see that l am alive and kicking.”

The rector said he had already briefed his lawyers, demanding that they take legal action against the online newspapers.

The Bayelsa State Orientation Camp at Kaiama, Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of the state has been thrown into a mourning mood following the death of a female member of the National Youth Service Corps, who reportedly died under a mysterious circumstance.

Miss Elechi Chiyerom, aged 27, was confirmed dead on Tuesday. She reportedly bled and vomited after arriving at the camp.

Elechi, a graduate of the Ignatius Azuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was confirmed dead about 9pm on Tuesday five days after arriving at the camp.

According to her colleagues the deceased had been “terribly sick” since she arrived at the camp and could not participate in some opening sessions at the camp.

Some officials of the NYSC claimed that the development was a case of “non-disclosure” of state of health by the corps member.

It was learnt that a search on her hostel section showed signs of excessive bleeding with her clothing and sanitary pads soaked in blood.

It was also learnt that the deceased corps member reportedly relapsed into ill-health and was rushed to the sick bay of the camp at about 8pm on Tuesday.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The doctor at the NYSC camp’s clinic immediately referred her to the state-owned Diette-Koki Memorial Hospital in the Opolo area of Yenagoa, the state capital, where she was confirmed dead.”

A lawmaker of the green chamber is pursuing a strong call for the reduction in the price of fuel to ameliorate the current hardship in the country.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Petroleum Products Prices Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) to review the current price template for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with a view to reducing the price to N70, Vanguard reports.

This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Rep. Abubaker Fulata titled “Urgent Need to Review the Petroleum Price Template”.

Moving the motion, Fulata expressed dismay over the circulating rumour of a possible hike in the price of petrol in the country. Although the rumour was denied by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Fulata said it was coming at a time when the nation is going through difficult times.

According to him, the hard times are occasioned by dwindling revenues, high inflation rate, unemployment and general fall in the standard of living of many Nigerians. The lawmaker noted that the current template for the price of PMS could be reviewed downwards without affecting the profit margin of marketers and transporters.

The review would also contribute to reducing the current inflationary trend in the economy.

“Storage charges N2.00, retailers margin N6.00, transport allowance N3.36, dealers margin N2.36, bridging fund N6.20 and marine transport average put at N0.15 bringing the total cost to N137.81,” he said.

He further informed the House that the landing cost of PMS remained at N119.74, while the distribution cost and margins of marketers stood at N18.37.

“Thus, the total of both the landing and distribution costs is N138.11, while marketers are allowed to sell the product within the range of N140 and N145 per litre. Fulata further noted that over 90 per cent of the current price of PMS in the country is accounted for by transport related charges at N124.34 out of N138.11.”

President Buhari Reveals The Kind Of Nigerians Involved In Pipeline Bombings

President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that the sort of people involved in pipeline bombings are not ordinary Nigerians.

According to Buhari, the sophistication of the weapons used by the militants indicated that they were not ordinary Nigerians.

The president spoke at the Presidential Villa after his investiture as the Grand Patron of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAE).

The Nation reports that the president urged the academy to advise its members not to deploy their skill in a negative way as ordinary people could not go into the sea for almost 70 kilometers to blow pipelines.

“How can ordinary Nigerians go into the deep sea almost 70 kilometers to blow installations, they are not ordinary Nigerians. So you have to talk to your members.”

He noted that 99 per cent of those that constructed the four refineries in the country were Nigerian engineers and assured that the country takes them seriously.

“Nigerian engineers are competent and cost effective. I respect you all, it takes a lot to be a competent engineers.”

The president blamed the leadership of the country for the fact that the refineries were not working and not the engineers.

Mrs. Joana Maduka who is the president of the NAE noted that in the past one year, Nigerian engineers were involved in the procurement and construction of a 600 megawatt power generating plant and a 330KV switching station, the biggest in the national grid.

She said: “Countries like China, USA, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia are examples of nations that have harnessed the benefits of their engineering academies for economic progress. Fellows of the Academy of Engineering are Engineers who have reached the peak of their careers and are invited to join”

Maduka also applauded the president for moving to fix all the infrastructural deficit in the country.

She said: “This effort is very germane to the development of our nation. For this to be done effectively and efficiently, inputs are required from all cadres of engineering disciplines.

“The physical indices of development of any country are engineering based like roads, railways, water supply, power, housing and other infrastructure. However, Nigerian Engineers are underutilized for the tasks and challenges of nation building.

“For the country to attain sustainable growth status, the Nigerian engineers need to be adequately engaged in planning, policy formulation, consultancy and construction as well as industrial processes of production and manufacturing.

“Furthermore, the fact is that Nigeria is grossly under-engineered as there are insufficient engineering professionals taking the population per capita basis. For example, in China, between 2000 and 2013, all the nine members of the Standing Committee (Ministers) of the Politburo were trained engineers.

“Currently, about half of the cabinet ministers in Singapore are engineers and in China, 70 per cent of the cabinet are engineers.”

Finally!! High Court Grants Goodluck Jonathan’s Minister Bail

Former FCT minister, Bala Mohammed, was on Tuesday, November 29, granted bail by an Abuja High court, Premium Times reports.

Mohammed was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on October 24, on allegations of fraud.

He remained in the custody of the commission despite an earlier administrative bail granted him by the EFCC.

Justice Hussein Yusuf had on November 25 adjourned hearing of an application for Mohammed’s bail.

Chris Uche, the former minister’s lawyer, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, said that the court granted the application.

He said: “The bail was granted this afternoon, with the same conditions in the administrative bail. He is expected to produce two sureties; who must be of the directorate cadre in the Nigerian Civil Service.

“They are also expected to have landed properties in Abuja.”

Mohammed, 58, a former senator representing Bauchi south senatorial district was the FCT minister from April 2010 till May 2015.

According to sources in EFCC, Mohammed was allegedly involved in extensive land racketeering as a minister. “After computation of the land deals that he struck, we discovered that more than N1.6 trillion could not be accounted for,” a source said.

Obasanjo Loses Millions In Fraudulent Deal

A subsidiary of Obasanjo Holdings Ltd has been allegedly defrauded of the sum of N105m by an Egba chief, Abiodun Ajayi.

One Chief Abiodun Ajayi has been dragged to court by the police for allegedly defrauding Alarab Properties, a subsidiary of Obasanjo Holdings Ltd of the sum of N105m.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the accused was arraigned before an Abeokuta magistrates’ court on three counts bordering on forgery, fraud and stealing.

The prosecutor, Sunday Eigbejiale, told the court that Ajayi, who is the Balogun of Ijemo in Abeokuta south council area, fraudulently forged the Sidipon community power of attorney and fraudulently used same to obtain the sum of N105m from Alarab Properties.

The prosecutor said the accused committed the alleged offences in a transaction involving the sale of 67 acres of land at the Sidipon Village.

The charge reads in part: “That you Salimon Abiodun Ajayi, between 2007 and 2012, with intent to defraud, did obtain the sum of N105m, property of Alarab Properties, a subsidiary of Obasanjo Holdings Limited, with the pretext that you are in position to sell 67acres of land to Alarab Properties and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of Ogun State 2004.”

However, the accused, who is also a petroleum products dealer, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

His counsel, Mr Akolade Afolabi, urged the court to admit his client to bail in line with constitutional provision, since the offence attracts no capital punishment.

Afolabi citing section 36(5) of Nigerian constitution argued that an accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Ruling on the bail application, Magistrate Oriyomi Sofowora, granted the accused bail in the sum N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Sofowora adjourned the case till Dec. 20.

In some other news, the EFCC has stuck a deal with a former minister of state for defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, which will see the latter testify against Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state and his aide, Mr. Abiodun Agbele in a case of alleged N4.7bn fraud.

A source with knowledge of the plea bargain said Musiliu Obanikoro was at the Abuja office of the EFCC on Monday morning, November 28 as part of investigations into the alleged fraud.

The source said since Obanikoro has confessed that he was the one who collected the N4.7bn and distributed it, noting that the ex-minister is in the best position to testify in court.

Nigerian Man Arrested In The U.S. For Scamming Elderly Woman Out Of Nearly $9,000

A 47-year-old Nigerian man has been arrested for scamming an elderly woman out of nearly $9,000 in Vermillion Parish, Louisiana, US, according to a news release from the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office. Attorney General Landry said:

“Our office is on the front lines investigating, arresting, and educating to help stop the awful occurrence of seniors being targeted and preyed upon by scammers”. “We want to help Louisiana’s people avoid falling victim to mortgage, contractor, charity and other types of frauds commonly perpetrated on senior citizens.”

Chigozie Valentine Agu was arrested on charges of Felony Theft in excess of $5,000, Bank Fraud, Money Laundering, and Racketeering.

The Metro Washington Airport Authority at Dulles Airport arrested Agu following an investigation by General Landry’s Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI) as he re-entered the United States. He was extradited to Louisiana and booked into the Vermillion Parish Correctional Center.

“It is an absolutely despicable crime to take advantage of our elderly family, friends, and neighbors,” continued General Landry. “No matter the great lengths these shameless criminals take, my office will do all we can to get justice for their victims.”

In May 2016, Agu contacted an elderly Vermillion Parish resident, telling her he was a Department of Homeland Security official and found a piece of luggage containing money he would return to her for a fee.

The LBI found proof that Agu received the money and that he attempted to conceal his crime through bank wire transfers and a third party. Overall, Agu scammed the elderly woman out of $8,890.

Mobile Internet Subscription Hits 93.5 Million In Nigeria

The number of mobile Internet subscription in the country rose by 35.71 million between 2013 and 2016, an analysis of data obtained from the Nigerian Communications Commission has shown.

According to the NCC, the mobile Internet subscription in the country stood at 93,554,076 as of September 2016 while as in October 2013, the total mobile subscription stood at 57,840,229.

This means that within the period of three years, mobile Internet subscription rose by 35,712,777. It also means that within the period of three years, mobile Internet subscription rose by 61.75 per cent.

Although at 32,771,259 subscribers, MTN Nigeria Communications Limited had the largest mobile subscription as of September 2016; Etisalat’s showed the biggest leap over the three year period as its mobile Internet subscription rose from 5,640,789 to 15,062,650, showing a difference of 9,421,861 or 167.03 per cent increase.

On the network of Airtel, the mobile Internet subscription rose from 9,650,631 in October 2013 to 18,832,238 as of September 2016. This shows a difference of 9,181,607 or 95.14 per cent growth rate.

Subscription on Globacom rose from 12,975,809 to 26,887,929 within the period. This means that the subscription grew by 13,912,120. This shows a growth rate of 107.22 per cent.

On the other hand, mobile Internet subscription on MTN rose from 29,477,200 to 32,771,259 within the period. This means that the mobile Internet subscription on the network rose by 3,294,059, showing a growth rate of 11.17 per cent.

Although over a period of three years, mobile Internet subscription in the country increased by 61.75 per cent, the subscription actually declined in the last one year.

Mobile Internet subscription in the country attained its peak in November 2015 when the subscription attained the height of 97,824,017.

As of October 2015, mobile Internet subscription stood at 97,518,398. This means that in the last 12 months, mobile Internet subscription in the country has declined by 3,964,322. This shows that the subscription declined by 4.06 per cent.

In the last three quarters of the year, the Nigerian economy has been in recession. The decline in the mobile Internet subscription could therefore mean that with lesser disposable income, more Nigerians who could not renew their data subscription opted out, leading to 4.06 per cent decline over the one year period within which the nation has witnessed recession.

The increase in mobile Internet subscription in the last three years has increased the revenue stream of digital operators. Even at an Average Revenue Per User of only N500 per month, 93,554,076 subscribers means additional N46.78bn a month in the coffers of mobile operators.

At the inception of digital mobile services in the country, operators had concentrated on only voice services. However, with advancement in technology, demand for higher productivity and mobile office, the rise in social networking and ubiquity of smartphones and other digital devices; there has been an increase in the demand for data services.

This has also reflected in the recent emphasis on mobile broadband services by both the industry regulator and mobile operators. In simple terms, broadband Internet means faster Internet services. Many subscribers are actually frustrated at the slow speed of connection offered by their service providers.

A number of operators have responded by making additional investments and launching 4G services. There is even fear that some that do not actually have 4G capability have only joined the bandwagon to advertise 4G services; just as they offer 2G services in the garb of 3G services.

An online professional, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he had been disappointed with the 3G offerings of two operators and therefore had not bordered about the new pitch of 4G technology.

“The 4G is limited to specific areas of the some cities. If you are not within those areas, you cannot enjoy 4G,” the subscriber said.

The Executive Vice-Chairman at the NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, recently put broadband penetration in the country at 21 per cent although the Alliance for Affordable Internet had also recently put the nation’s broadband Internet penetration at 14 per cent.

Danbatta said to reduce pressure on the existing lower microwave frequency bands and increase broadband access across the country, the NCC planned to license the 38 GHz and 42 GHz bands, adding that both bands were suitable for short hop and point-to-point terrestrial links.

The bands also support 3G/4G/LTE backhaul and a high degree of frequency reuse due to the high directivity of their antennas.

He said, “Currently in Nigeria, more than 10 terabytes of telecommunications capacity exist at the landing point, but the challenge is the deployment of fibre infrastructure across the country that will effectively distribute this capacity to the distribution nodes at the metropolitan areas of all regions in the country that will supply sufficient fibre capacity to the backbone.

“The commission is finalising subsidy agreements with two infrastructure companies, Infraco Nigeria Limited and I-Connect Infrastructure Services Limited for the Lagos and North Central Zones, respectively to facilitate the rollout of broadband services.”

The President who was in doubt about the sophistry of the perpetrators felt that the militants were getting help from highly skilled engineering personnel who were inclined to using their skills negatively.

According to him, going into the sea for almost 70 kilometres to blow pipelines with ease were not ordinary.
The President spoke, Tuesday, after his investiture as the Grand Patron of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAE), led by its President, Mrs. Joanna Maduka, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said:

“If I will go in the negative side, ‎how can an ordinary Nigerian go into the sea, 70 kilometres or more, go down two meters and blow up oil installations that cannot be an ordinary Nigerian.

“So, I hope you will appeal to your colleagues to make sure that what we have built, they should regard it whether they are working with multi-nationals or the government.”

10 Categories Of People That May Not Afford To Browse When Data Rates Increases

Despite the quagmire state of the nation, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has chosen to add to our problems by mandating local service providers to increase their data rates for irrelevant reasons, starting from the 1st of December.

Without deceiving ourselves, this directive from NCC will be unfavorable to subscribers as many may denied frequent internet access. Without wasting time, the following people may no longer have access to the internet when data rates increases.

1. Broke guys

Recession has turned many financially buoyant guys to become broke that they can’t even boast of two square meal let alone subscribe for a full month data plan. Many will agree with me that NCC will only be compounding these people’s problems because they will have to borrow phones from their enemies just to check their Bet9ja tickets.

2. Whatsapp subscribers

The whatsapp subscribers are so economical that they can manage 10MB for a whole year without getting exhausted. By the time 20MB monthly whatsapp plan is reduced to 2MB per month, these people will only switch on their data once in every 23 hours just reply the pending whatsapp messages

3. Facebook subscribers

Once data rates increases, monitoring spirits on facebook will drastically reduce as guy will not be able to ass-lick ladies on social media. In fact, they will only view ladies profile pictures on Facebook and will not be able to comment since they will be managing their weekly data plans which might be reduced to from 25MB to 10MB

4. Stingy/Greedy people

These are the people that have money yet stingy to themselves. Even if they’re being offered 50GB for N1, 000, they will still wail and complain that they deserve more. These people are likely to use their money to gulp beer and devour nkwobi when data rate is Increased as they see it as waste of money.

5. Night crawlers

These are the people that can’t browse during the daytime but will have to wait till 12am so that they can subscribe for N25 night browsing just to dowload from naijauncut and xvideos. I believe it’s cruelty if service providers increase data rates and cease night browsing plans because these people will no longer have any hope of surfing the net even at midnight

6. Cheap phones users

Some people are using cheap phones that can’t even subscribe Airtel 3GB monthly plan. When data rates is increased, they may choose not to subscribe again their monthly data plan can even buy their phones.

7. Those who relay on people for data sharing

Those who rely on people to share data with them will be put to shame because, increase in data rates will make those who share data with them to become stingy. These people will become wailers and will begin to rain curses on Buhari and NCC

8. Ladies who rely on men for subscription

I know that thing will soon go worse that most guys will not be able to subscribe for themselves let one subscribe for ladies. Therefore, ladies will be willing to trade their virginity for data subscription so that they can have access to Facebook and whatsapp. The ones who can’t do this will be stranded as life will become boring to them.

9. Data resell scammers

Those who spam social media with ridiculously cheap data plans may not be able to even subscribe let alone spam websites in a bid to scam people.

10. Thugs/Derailers

I have already predicted that increase in data rates will bring about peace on social media as hooligans, bashers and derailers will not be able to subscribe let alone bash people on social media. This implies that only the rich will be found on social media.
